Traditional Open Day in Bohmte (EDXD) on May 1st

News

On May 1, 2026, starting at 9:00 a.m., the Wittlage e.V. aviation sports club will once again host its traditional “Open House” at the Bohmte-Bad Essen airfield.

Here, the motto “Aviation sports up close in a family atmosphere” is literally the program. The event has made a name for itself far beyond the borders of the former Wittlage district. This year, the club can also look back on its 75th anniversary. After modest beginnings and an eventful history as a guest at other airfields, the current airfield, featuring a small glider runway, was able to open for operations in 1968.

In addition to the many opportunities to fly along, this May Day program once again offers information on private pilot training for gliding, powered flight, ultralight flying, and model aircraft flying. At the large information booth, visitors can climb into a cockpit at their leisure and even hold the control stick. Active pilots will be on hand to answer any questions guests may have about the aerodrome. The German Armed Forces will be on site with a helicopter and their Career Center to directly answer questions from young professionals about the various career opportunities available in the Army, Navy, and Air Force.

The flight program once again promises a number of highlights in the skies above Bohmte. The Nibergall family has once again confirmed their participation; father and son will be showcasing aerobatic team flying at its finest. Last year, their performance, featuring the “Marchettis,” was the crowd favorite.

From Ballenstedt, the “Tante Anna” will once again be on hand, a 1,000-horsepower biplane with 9 seats for leisurely sightseeing flights. Of course, the program also includes a sightseeing helicopter with 5 passenger seats. Scenic flights are also available in vintage biplanes, such as a Boeing Stearman. The sky will be splashed with color thanks to the skydivers from Damme, who will be coming to Bohmte with a large drop platform.

Right next to the “big ones,” model aircraft enthusiasts have their own flying area within walking distance. From small electric model aircraft to large jet fighters weighing up to 330 pounds (150 kg), the “modelers” get them all into the air. A coffee bar, childcare, a giant raffle with valuable prizes including an electric bicycle and a TV, as well as bouncy castles for free use, a children's carousel, and a trampoline, complete the program. Admission to the event is free, and directions to the venue are well signposted. The organizer recommends that local residents cycle to the airfield.

Parking spaces are available right at the airfield; a parking fee will be charged.

Information on parking and updates about the event will be posted on the club's website: www.lsv-wittlage.de
